Aaminah Kausar

Working for an arts organisation where my role focuses heavily on youth and community work is a unique experience, yet my love for both sides of what I do began in high school. Whilst studying and falling in love with textiles at GCSE, I was also part of a youth club that focused on community involvement and projects. I was able to develop this passion further when I moved to CRGS Sixth Form. There, I started a society that combined talking about social issues with art, ran multiple fundraisers that raised thousands of pounds for charity, and I’m proud to say both the society and fundraisers continue to this day.

At the age of 18, I noticed a pattern: people my age were keen to leave Nelson due to the lack of opportunities; yet very few wanted to stay and try to resolve the issue. I made the choice to stay, to see if I could make a difference.

My current role at In-Situ is part of a two-year internship, and I primarily work on the This is Nelson Project. My role of engagement and participation allows me to work on various different projects within TIN and dabble in different areas, which I am very grateful for. One of the main projects I’ve developed is the Young Makers Market, a space for young creatives and business owners to showcase and sell their work, gaining a wider audience and real-world experience. I’ve also been involved in the FOOD Nelson project from the beginning, and I’m incredibly proud of how it has developed and grown over time.

Outside of work, I love to read, create art and travel. I’m always interested in new and exciting experiences-  fulfilling my childhood dreams one at a time and adding more to that list at the same time! I also volunteer for Pendle Palestine Twinning Group and for the youth and community department of Marsden Heights Community College.
